NSW CHS WINS TITLE. Queensland went down 24-18 to NSW Combined High Schools in the final of the National Championships. Queensland had the first scoring opportunity of the match after NSW knocked on from the first tackle of the kickoff, but were unable to get across the line, and the next 12 minutes was a nightmare for the Queenslanders with the Blues running in 4 tries to open up a 20-0 gap. Incredibly the CHS side had started well in every game of the Championships scoring at least 12 points in the first 10 mins of every game. Qld finally steadied with a try in  the 17th minute, but perhaps the killer blow was a try from a double kick through from the NSW side right on half-time taking them out to a 24-6 lead at the break. Queensland managed to post the only points of the second stanza with 2 converted tries, but the mountain provedd to climb and the NSW CHS side hung on to win 24-18.
In the absence of injured Pat McPherson, Lagi Setu moved to the front row and played an inspirational match, topping both the tackles and the hit-ups.  He was ably supported in defence by Nathan Strudwick and Jay Aston who both got through 20 tackles and Simona Vavega who pulled off som massive hits. In the backs Joel Moon and Daniel Issac got through a mountain of defence whilst Alex Tallon and Martin Paulson looked dangerous in attack. Matt Smith also played another great game off the bench, as did Matt Sepelini whose charges were a feature of the Queensland performance.

NSW COMBINED HIGH SCHOOLS SPOIL QUEENSLANDS RUN: NSW Combined High Schools defeated Queensland 24-10 on day 4 of the National Champioships, primarily due to a blistering start where they scored 3 converted tries in the first 9 minutes of the match. Despite having already qualified for Friday's final against the Queenslanders courtesy of a surprise 10 all draw between ACT and NSW Catholic Colleges, NSW looked much the hungrier side on the night, and through their win retained the interstate shield  which Queensland could have claimed with a draw or a win. After their shaky start, Queensland steadied and, in fact outscored the Blues for the rest of the match but the damage had been done.
NSW were almost flawless in the first half, completing 12/13 sets whilst Queensland had only themselves to blame completing a miserly 8/16 in the first stanza. The opening minute of the second half brought more bad news for the Maroons, with workhorse prop Pat McPherson injuring his knee in a tackle, and now being in severe doubt for Friday's final. The Queenslanders hung in there however led by their man-of-the-match Matt Sepelini who brushed the defence aside in a number of bruising runs. Marty Paulson and Daniel Issac were also outstandin for the Maroons, whilst Lagi Setu put in another wholehearted performance. Joel Moon, who was only drafted into the side last week also turned in an eyecatching performance, and Matt Smith shone in the uinfamiliar hooking role in the second half. All in all however it was just a"blue" night for Qld in the cold wet conditions.

QUEENSLAND WRAP UP FINAL SPOT ON DAY 2: Queensland have wrapped up a spot in the final of the National U15 Champioships on Friday in Cabramatta with a comprehensive 50-0 defeat of ACT today. Earlier NSW Combined Catholic Colleges and NSW Combined High Schools played a thrilling 18 all draw meaning a win would secure Qld a place in the final irrespective of the result of their match with NSW Combined High Schools on Wednesday night.
Qld opened well, scoring in the 2nd minute when a neat chip kick by Alex Tallon was regathered by Steve Beaumont who scored in the corner. Marty Paulson's conversion from touch gave the Maroons just the start they wanted. When lock and Man-of-the-Match Jay Aston crashed over for the first of his three tries in the 9th minute the writing was really on the wall for the ACT side, tired from their tough match against NSW Combined High Schools yesterday where they fought back to go down by only 2 points. Andrew Bell backed up a neat blindside move to see Qld out to an 18-0 lead after 13 minutes, but the ACT defence strengthened and the Queenslanders were held out until the shadow of half-time when Jay Aston beat three tacklers in a weaving run to score under the posts.
Queensland were determined not to relax in the second half as they had done yesterday and went futher ahead five minutes after the break when Aston again crossed under the posts for a 30-0 lead. Queensland's defence was equally as devastating as their attack and they missed only 7 tackles all day, snuffing out the ACT attack completely. Hooker Nathan Strudwick beat 3 players in a 35 metre run before putting Alex Tallon away, and it was 40-0 when Marty Paulson crossed after a neat flick on from Daniel Issac.
Qld racked up the 50 through an 80 metre try from Alex Tallon from a 20 tap and Steve Beaumont plucked the attempted short restart from this try to run 65 metres and score.
Once again the Qld forwards were impressive with Pat McPherson (19 tackles/11 hit-ups) and Lagi Setu (16 tackles/8 hit-ups) prominent along with Jay Aston who was a deserving Man-of-the-Match. Nathan Strudwick and Brady Payne caused the defence plenty of headaches whilst Marty Paulson had a great game contributing 18 points from a try and 7 goals from 9 attempts, many from wide out.

QUEENSLAND OPENS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A WIN: Queensland have survived a withering finish from NSW Combined Catholic Colleges to open their National Championship quest with a 22-20 victory. The first half was a real battle, with the NSW team opening the scoring in the 8th minute after receiveing a repeat set from a fumbled bomb. Queensland maintained their composure however and replied with a try to Cameron Heading from dummy half after some sustained attack. Qld got the upper hand right on half time when the NSW side spilled a ball in the in-goal area after a neat grubber from Brady Payne and Cameron Heading dived on the loose ball for his second try. Both the Qld tries were converted from near the sideline by Martin Paulsen to give Qld a 12-6 lead at the break.
Qld opened the second half much better than their opposition and were rewarded with a neat try to Nathan Strudwick from dummy half an a strong effort from Luke Menhinnit to jump away to a 22-6 lead after only 8 minutes. They seemed to have the game well in their keeping but NSWCCC had other ideas and started to capitalise on Queensland mistakes. They drew a little closer with a try wide out with 10 minutes remaining to bring the score back to 22-10. A simple mistake by the Queenslanders in their own quarter gave the NSW boys another chance which they happily accepted to trail by only 6 with 5 minutes remaining. Yet another mistake gave them a final chance and they crossed wide out, but to Queensland's relief the conversion attempt after the hooter just swung wide.
Pat McPherson with 19 tackles and 14 string hit-ups deservedly won the Man-of-the-Match award for Qld, and he was well supported in the forwards by Lagi Setu, Nathan Strudwick and Jay Aston. Brady Payne caused a heap of trouble at half back whilst Cameron Heading and Alex Tallon got through a lot of work in the centres. Luke Menhinnit at fullback also worked hard and made a great break in the second half.

QUEENSLAND WIN TEST: Queensland defeated NSW Combined High Schools  in the U15 Test Match played at Moree on June 25. In heavy rain and a strong wind, the Queensland pack got on top of their counterparts in a match that was tough but not spectacular, mainly due to the difficult conditions. Queensland opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a try to Brady Payne, and jumped away to a half-time 10-0 lead with a converted try to Cameron Heading, after Alex Tallon made a 70 metre break just before the break. Lagi's try set-up a 16-0 lead with Nsw's only points came when their Man-of-the-Match Kris Keating dived on a grubber in the in-goal area with 12 minutes remaining.
For Queenland there was not a bad player, with all 20 of the squad contributing. Lagi Setu picked up the Man of the Match award in a non-stop performance, and his terrorising of the Blue forwards was also rewarded with a try in the second half. Prop Pat McPherson and lock Jay Aston also made a heap of ground in the forwards. whilst in the backs captain Brady Payne marshalled his troops well, with centre Alex Tallon outstanding in both attack and defence.
